Advising Codes for Fall and Spring
-
Advisor will
receive this information from the
Student Services Coordinator.
-
Advising
codes change each semester.
-
Advising
codes are given to students after advising contact has been made.
-
Students
cannot register for fall and/or spring terms without advising code information.
Advising Codes for Summer
-
Students do
NOT use advising codes for summer semester registration.
-
Advisors
must report advising contact to the Student Services Coordinator.
-
Students who
do not contact their advisors will have a registration block placed on their
record.
To have this block
removed, students must initiate advising contact with their advisors.
-
The advisor
then reports advising contact to the
Student Services Coordinator who
removes the registration block.
Auditing a Class
-
Students
need instructor permission to audit a class.
-
The
instructor must sign a Course Action form to show approval.
-
No grade
points or credits are earned from an audited class.
-
Approved BIS
tuition and fees apply to audited courses.
-
Audited
courses do not apply to minimum or maximum credit hours allowed.
BIS Course Information
-
BIS class schedules are available
online through the Registrar’s Course Offering Directory (COD)
-
BIS course syllabi may be available in
the
Toolkit. The Toolkit for any BIS
courses can also be reached through the COD by clicking on the desired Schedule
Number.
Blocks, Registration
-
Registration
blocks are placed in ISIS to prevent students from registering because a
requirement has not been fulfilled. For example, if a student owes money to
U.Va., a Bursar’s registration block will be placed on the student’s record.
The student must
take care of the requirement before the block can be removed, e.g. pay money
owed to the Bursar’s Office.
-
Only the
department that placed the block can delete it in ISIS.
-
Exception: Blocks placed on BIS student records by Student Health have been placed in
error. Please notify the
Student Services Coordinator who
will have the block removed.
-
Students can go
to
ISIS online to check for registration
blocks.
Capstone Experience
-
Students
earn 3 credit hours in the Proseminar ISPS 399, and
3 credit hours in the Capstone Project, ISCP 400.
-
Prior to
taking ISCP 400 students prepare a project proposal that must be approved
by the faculty mentor and the BIS Director or Course Coordinator.

Counseling
-
When
students are experiencing academic or personal difficulties, they may wish to
discuss these issues with their advisors.
-
Advisors
should ask students for permission to share information with BIS director or
appropriate BIS staff.
-
If the
advisor believes that the student may harm himself/herself or others, the
advisor is obligated by law to inform someone at the University such as the BIS
staff, the Dean of Students, or the police. Emergency phone numbers:9 + 911
from a U.Va. phone, 911 from a non-U.Va. phone.
-
In the above
situation, the advisor should try to bring the student to a hospital emergency
room, the BIS office, or the
Dean of Students office in Peabody
Hall.
Credit Limit, BIS
-
BIS students
may register themselves for up to 9 credits per semester.
-
To register
for more than 9 credits, students must first seek advisor's permission.

BIS Student Services Coordinator
by email.
-
If
permission is granted, students complete
add/drop forms for each course to be
added beyond 9 credits.
Students must
submit the completed form to the BIS Student Services Coordinator so that
classes can be added manually to ISIS.
-
Students may
also email the
BIS Student Services Coordinator with their course
registration requests.
