Certificate in Adolescent Literacy
(Available at our Hampton Roads, Northern Virginia, Richmond, Roanoke, and University Centers)
Successfully teaching reading and writing for the older student requires an understanding and appreciation of adolescent learners. Engagement, motivation, and interest are a critical part of adolescent learning. Literacy at this level includes preparation for the world of adult work in the digital age. Not only are the academic skills of reading and writing on the page necessary, but also skill with the multiple modes of communication whose chief characteristic is rapid innovation and change.
Our Certificate in Adolescent Literacy is designed for teachers of upper elementary, middle, and high school students. The certificate consists of six graduate-level courses, for a total of 16 credits.
Courses are offered on an on-going basis. All six courses must be completed to earn the certificate. However, students can enroll in one or more courses without earning the certificate.
The certificate may also be earned while completing the Master of Education, Reading Education.
