High school or home schooled students

Exceptional juniors and seniors who would like to pursue advanced study in an academic area where they have exhausted their available resources are eligible to participate in the Community Scholar Program.  These requests will be considered on a term-by-term basis, and high school students are limited to one course per semester.

There is a special tuition rate available for high school students participating in the Community Scholar Program. The 2009-2010 rate is $250 per credit for in-state students and $550 per credit for out-of-state students. In addition to tuition, a $5 per credit hour administrative technology fee is assessed.

High School Students
A minimum overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 is required.  Interested applicants must submit the following documentation prior to each semester of enrollment:
  1. An up-to-date high school transcript

  2. A signed Community Scholar Parent/Guardian Permission to Enroll Form

  3. A letter of recommendation from the Principal, Director, or Guidance Counselor of the high school specifying: a) what course the student plans to pursue, b) that the course is not available at the high school, and c) why that course should be taken at the University of Virginia.

Review of the high school student’s application materials will commence when all requested documents have been received by the Community Scholar office. The Director the University Center will determine program and course eligibility for registration and communicate with the student applicant following such review.

Once the above requirements have been satisfied, Community Scholar procedures will apply.  Please see sidebar on left for further details on what courses are available, how to enroll in a course, semester tuition and calendar, and more.

Home Schooled Students
Documentation is required, such as PSAT scores, credit by exam, and a letter of permission from the student’s parent/guardian.  Additional information and credentials or an interview may be requested.

Once the above requirements have been satisfied, Community Scholar procedures will apply.  Please see sidebar on left for further details on what courses are available, how to enroll in a course, semester tuition and calendar, and more.
