Course Description: Landscape design can be as much a fine art as music or painting. Applying the basic principles of design and land use analysis to the outside of your home can lay the foundation for a masterpiece. Understanding what to plant, where, and most importantly, why, is essential to creating a practical and pleasing environment. In this course, you will learn how to use plants to enhance your use of outdoor space whether it is a postage stamp town yard, a grand estate, or somewhere in between. We will learn to discover the variety of microclimates every property possesses and how to find the right plant for the right place. Topics include landscape assessment and land use analysis, elements of design, fundamentals of planting and maintenance, and a basic palette of groundcovers, shrubs and trees for the home landscape. A Saturday afternoon field trip will illustrate the concepts presented in class. By course end, you will be able to look at your home landscape with a trained eye and make full use of it in terms of the way you live and the specific plant habitats your property can provide.
