Opera's Changing Scenes

Course Description: In our continually evolving culture, certain modes of thought rise up and receive special identities. The concerns of a particular era are reflected in the arts. Through guided listening and viewing of recorded performances, we will explore the changing cultural scenes that are mirrored in the music dramas of the periods of the Enlightenment, Romanticism, Neo-classicism, the beginning of Jazz.

Notes and Comments: Registration will begin August 11, 2008. Operas will include Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande, Verdi’s Otello, Berg’s Wozzeck, Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress, and Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess.
