Course Description: In our culturally diverse region, Spanish is often the only language spoken by patients and families. This course will introduce health care providers and administrators to the Spanish language, with an emphasis on medical terminology. It is designed for those who have very limited or no exposure to Spanish or other romance languages. Along with medical terms and useful phrases, this course will provide instruction in pronunciation, elementary grammar and cultural considerations important to Spanish speaking populations. Role-playing with other students and with native speakers playing fictitious patients will assist in developing and applying oral communication skills. Video and taped segments will provide aural practice. Topics will include basic needs, taking patient and family histories, giving instructions, nutrition, a physical, pre-operative situations, surgery, mental health, family planning, and child birth.
Notes and Comments: Registration will begin August 11, 2008. There will be no class on October 23 or November 27.
