Writing for Children

Course Description: This workshop will appeal to writers and aspiring writers of all ages and backgrounds who love children's books and want to learn how to write for children. You will learn the basic components of children’s books with a focus on picture books, but also including easy readers, chapter books, and middle-grade and young adult novels. We will also explore writing poetry for children as well as writing fiction and nonfiction for children’s magazines. Each student will develop ideas, characters, plots and rough-draft manuscripts within the genre of their choice. The last class will focus on how to submit manuscripts to editors and publishers and how to discover which publishers may be receptive to your work. The workshop is limited to fifteen students.
