Introduction to Buddhism

Course Description: Buddhism teaches its followers to perform wholesome actions, to avoid harmful actions, and to purify and train the mind. The aim of these practices is to become free from suffering and achieve enlightenment. This course will provide a basic understanding of the history, thought and practice of Buddhism. We will outline the beliefs that structure this religion, paying special attention to The Four Noble Truths, and will look at ways in which these ideas are present in the arts and architecture of Buddhist cultures. We will also explore Buddhism’s three main branches, most prominent schools, Buddhist meditation, and Buddhism’s impact throughout the world.
