Islamic History and Religion

Course Description: Islam is the fastest growing religion in America and the second largest religion in the world. This course will survey Islamic religion and history. We will begin with the founding of Islam and move on to cover such topics as the various Islamic empires; political developments; important religious doctrines and beliefs; the development of sectarianism (for example, the Sunni-Shi’ite divide) and its impact on religious practice and beliefs; the importance of Islamic mysticism; the development of Islamic law; and the impact of colonialism and modernization on the Islamic world today. We will end with topics such as jihad, terrorism and the place of women in Islamic tradition. Time will be set aside each week for questions and discussion.
