English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement

(Available in our Northern Virginia, Richmond, Roanoke, Southwest and University Centers)

Courses to meet the requirements for the Virginia Department of Education endorsement in English as a Second Language preK-12 are offered through our regional centers.  These courses are open to individuals who hold a current teaching license in Virginia including persons who hold the Provisional License.  The endorsement in ESL will not be granted until the candidate has met all requirements for the Collegiate Professional or Postgraduate Professional License in another licensure area. Courses are delivered in a mix of digital teleconference and face-to-face modes.


Required Courses

These courses may be taken at any time during the course sequence:

These courses must be taken in the following order:

Virginia Department of Education Licensure Regulations 8 VAC 20-22-350  English as a Second Language PreK-12 Endorsement Requirements:

The candidate must have: 

  1. Graduated from an approved teacher preparation program in ESL,
    or

  2. Completed 24 semester hours of coursework distributed in the following areas:

  • Teaching of reading (courses must include the five areas of reading instruction:  phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and text comprehension as well as the similarities and differences between reading in the first language and reading in the second language; one course must address reading instruction to English language learners); 6 semester hours

  • English linguistics (including phonology, morphology, syntax of English): 3 semester hours

  • Cross-cultural education: 3 semester hours

  • Modern foreign languages (if an applicant’s primary language is other than English, all 6 hours must be in English): 6 semester hours*

  • Electives in second language acquisition, general linguistics, applied linguistics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, ESL assessment, or ESL curriculum development: 3 semester hours; and

  • Methods of teaching ESL at the elementary and secondary levels: 3 semester hours

*The 6-semester hour foreign language requirement may be met by either undergraduate or graduate course work.
