Initial Licensure in Special Education, General Curriculum
(Available at our Northern Virginia Center)
The Initial Licensure in Special Education is designed to meet the rapidly expanding need for well-trained special education teachers throughout the state. Developed in partnership with The Curry School of Education, the program is designed to prepare those without teaching experience, career changers, persons with provisional licenses, and general education teachers to teach students with mild disabilities. Since there is a large population of students with mild disabilities who have problems reading, the program will also emphasize reading education.
**On September 21, 2007, state licensure requirements changed for special educators. This nondegree program is designed to satisfy the state's licensure requirements in the area of special education, general curriculum. Courses and number of required credits may change slightly in the coming months. At this time, students are required to complete a total of 30 credit hours, and pass the Praxis examinations as well as the state-required assessments.
