PreK-6 Licensure Program

(Available at our Roanoke Center)

The PreK-6 Licensure Program consists of a sequence of courses designed to enable participants to obtain a Collegiate Professional License as elementary education classroom teachers PreK-6. Upon successful completion of the course sequence, candidates will be eligible for licensure and employment as a PreK-6 classroom teacher in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The U.Va. Curry School of Education will recommend all participants who complete the program for licensure. Upon successful completion of the required PRAXIS examinations, the Virginia Reading Assessment, and any other state required testing, those successfully completing this non-degree program will be eligible for the Five-Year Renewable Collegiate Professional License with endorsement as a PreK-6 classroom teacher. Note: Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree.

This is a part-time professional development program designed for the working adult and takes approximately 16 months to complete. Classes are held weeknights and/or Saturdays.

Students who have competed the program and have obtained their teaching license may apply to become candidates for the M.Ed. Elementary Education degree offered at the Curry School of Education in Charlottesville. If accepted, up to 18 credit hours of the PreK-6 Licensure Program may be transferred toward the M.Ed. degree program.
